Read for the Cure began in 2006 in Toronto, Canada, when two members of a west Toronto book club who had just finished treatment for cancer had a great idea. Acknowledging the important role of reading in their lives and the wonderful support they had received from their fellow members during their treatment, they saw an opportunity to harness the energy of enthusiastic book clubs and readers to raise funds for cancer research.
In 2007 we hosted two small author events in the GTA featuring award-winning Random House authors. Since then we have added Ottawa and Calgary to our list of event locations. All proceeds from our events are donated to research into environmental links to cancer. In 2012 we donated $138,000 to cancer research; since those first events in 2007, we have donated over $500,000 to cancer research.
