This year’s event at Toronto’s Liberty Grand was
another huge success. Hundreds of people came out to see our bestsellers, and Emcee Johanna Schneller of the Globe and Mail did a fantastic job prompting our authors to speak about their novels as well as their journeys to literary success.
Giller-winner Vincent Lam spoke eloquently about the unexpected ways in which he identifies with his gambling title character in The Headmaster’s Wager; he admitted to being familiar with the aspect of making a wager when it comes to his career because, as he said, both writers and readers make bets when selecting a book. Erin Morgenstern, the first-time phenom behind The Night Circus, described the long road she travelled before acquiring her book deal. This quirky award-winner, who didn’t even own a passport before her book tour, detailed the importance of not only thinking about your book, but actually getting pen to paper and writing it. Finally, artist/educator Audrey Niffenegger spoke about the extensive research she did for Her
Fearful Symmetry, which included becoming a tour guide at England’s famous Highgate Cemetery. She gladly bestowed upon the audience her answer to the frequently-asked question of where she gets her book ideas, saying that it isn’t the having of ideas that is important, but the recognition of potentially good ones.
We had some amazing prizes up for bid at the silent auction! The lucky winners went home with items such as a dinner for 10 by Pusateri’s Executive Chef Tony Cammalleri and a book club visit from Wayne Johnston, bestselling author of A World Elsewhere and The Colony of Unrequited Dreams.
