The inaugural campaign in October 2007 featured two memorable evenings, one at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto and one at Le Dome in Oakville, and raised over $20,000 for the Cancer Research Society (CRS). Random House authors Karen Connelly, Joy Fielding, C.S. Richardson, and Anne Laurel Carter talked about the joys and struggles of their work, rather than reading. This unique format proved to be very popular and is incorporated in all our events.
In October 2008, book lovers gathered again on three evenings in Toronto and Oakville, to sip wine, nibble hors d’oeuvres, and listen to award-winning authors Miriam Toews, Vincent Lam, Jan Wong, Elizabeth Hay, Rona Maynard, and David Adams Richards. Over $35,000 was raised for the CRS.
In 2009, we expanded to four events, including a sell-out event in Ottawa, and found larger venues to accommodate growing audiences at three events in Toronto. Attendees enjoyed Random House authors Ian Brown, Joan Barfoot, Wayson Choy, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Andrew Pyper, Nino Ricci, Catherine Gildiner, Jane Urquhart, Anita Rau Badami, and Anne Michaels. These events raised over $70,000 for the CRS, exceeding our goal. Thank you!!
